How to Create Picture File to Upload

In order to upload a picture, the file must be in a proper format. The wiki can upload files that are in .jpg, .png. or .pif format. If you want to upload a specific picture onto the wiki, you have to copy and paste and save it as one of the working formats. Since all of the lecture slides are in .pdf, it will be helpful to learn how to copy certain pictures from a .pdf file into a .png/.jpg/.pif file. To start off, you must load the document in Adobe Reader. Once you load the file in Adobe Reader, you must upload "Snapshot Tool." Its in the "Tool" menu and scroll down to "Customize Toolbars."

Once the "Customize Toolbars" pops up, scroll down and click on the box for "Snapshot Tool."

The "Snapshot Tool" button will show up on the top of the menu and click on the button to use its function.

Once you find the diagram/picture that you want to copy, highlight the picture with the "Snapshot Tool."

You can copy the picture into the Paint program. From there, you can crop and edit the picture such as adding arrows and cropping out unnecessary portions of the copied picture. Once you are done, you can save the file in .png, jpg, or .pif.

In addition, if you want to convert pictures from a word document or powerpoint, you can just copy and paste the pictures to the Paint program and save as one of the formats.

How to Upload a File

In order to call on a file to be used on the wiki it needs to be uploaded to the wiki. To upload a file first notice the 'toolbox' on the left side of the wiki. It is on the very far left under the search bar and looks like this:

Click the 'upload file' button to reach a page that looks like this:

From here you can upload any file to the wiki as to be referenced in any wiki page. Such examples include the pictures you find here on this page. Make sure to test your file's extension compatibility by previewing any page you reference your file in. See Help on loading documents onto the wiki for more details involving uploading files other than pictures to be viewed directly on the wiki. Any file extension can be uploaded to the wiki for storage and have a link to the storage location on a page. An example includes using the 'Media File Link' method by pressing the Image:Media_File_Link.png button located in the toolbar above the editing window when editing. It will create a link to the file instead of displaying the file's contents on the wiki page. Quite useful for mathematica files, spreadsheet files, documents, and any other extensive files that are not easily seen in tables or pictures.

For more extensive examples of how to reference files uploaded to the wiki just look at the editing page of any wiki page with lots of media items on it. One such example is the Root Locus Plots page which has lots of pictures and references to files.
