For clarity, I would note there are alternative spreadsheet programs available with some of the same tools. Specifically, I call out the open source GNUmeric homepage, which certainly has the solver feature ...I have not evaluated the "calc" module of Open Office ...--Billymac00 17:01, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
Another option would be to work these out in other open source materials such as SAGE in python or Octave. Lots of advantages here, and would get away from Excel. The only downside is that these sources have a bit more of a learning curve. PeterWoolf 17:39, 20 May 2008 (EDT)

Does the VAR function really estimate the variance of the data? Isn't it estimating the variance of the population, not the sample? alexdowl 22:15, 23 Dec 2008 (EDT)
I would like to confirm that Excel uses non-linear programming/gradient-based techniques in the solver.
Add a description of the search options for the solver.
